5 Tips for Newbie Bloggers

By Blogging

Do you have a blog or use it as a tool for your business? Blogging is a fun and creative outlet, and can be an excellent way to market your brand our business, but it can also take a lot of time to learn the tricks of marketing and promotion. After blogging consistently for nearly five years, in 2016 my parenting blog mommy in SPORTS  was named the BEST BLOG MIAMI by the Miami New Times. Over the years, I’ve also seen a significant increase in page views, sponsored opportunities, and have had success in syndicating my posts to several other larger sites like the Huffington Post, TODAY Parents, and Scary Mommy. And now I want to help newbie bloggers do the same!

Sometimes it can be hard to find the right growth or traffic for your blog. These 5 tips for newbie bloggers will help you grow, learn from a pro!

Since I receive many emails and questions frequently about how to start a blog, monetize it, and increase website traffic, I thought I’d put together a resource called 5 Tips for Newbie Bloggers. If you don’t have time to watch the video (filmed by my 6 year old!), please read below.

5 tips  for newbie bloggers

1. High Quality Photos

Think about your favorite website or blog – what really stands out to you? Usually it’s the visual appeal including the photos. But not all of us are professional photographers, so what do we do? Here are a few suggestions!

I usually take most of my own photos, or use free stock images. The VSCO Cam app on your phone is a good option, but honestly the camera on the iPhone 7 is phenomenal! (I took all of the photos in this post with the iPhone 7 and the PR person for the brand thought they were high quality DSLR.) I also use my Nikon 5000 with a 35mm lens for food or close ups. Bottom line, pictures are really important, they set the tone for your content and are visuals to break up lengthy text. Be judicious when creating a “look” for your imagery.

Free Stock Images for your site:  Pexels and Pixabay are free, as is The Stocks.  Getty Images , Slap Dash Mom & Buffer have great roundup of photo sites as well. Oh and don’t forget to name your images to optimize SEO in the Alt Text. This is key!

 2. Find Your Blogging Tribe

When I first started blogging I heard this all the time, and I didn’t understand why we all need a blogging tribe…until now. There are so many wonderful blogging communities online, start with searching Facebook groups. I am in many, and have made several real life friends and business partners. It’s important to support other women and help lift each other up. Plus I still learn so much every day! I started with the SITS Girls, and now belong to several groups like Awesome Bloggers and Mommy Bloggers Like Swap. But search your niche, there are groups for everyone!

Sometimes it can be hard to find the right growth or traffic for your blog. These 5 tips for newbie bloggers will help you grow, learn from a pro!

3.Promote, Promote, Promote!

The hardest thing for most bloggers is pimping their own work, but promotion is key. Don’t be afraid to share your new blog posts on all of your social media channels several times, and ask for people to share it for you! Also, re-sharing and promoting old content is super important too. Katy Widrick wrote a great book on this – I highly recommend it!

There is no right or wrong way to promote yourself, but use social media and be social. I usually schedule my social using Co-Schedule  – and utilize all platforms. Don’t be afraid of Twitter either, it’s a powerful tool! Here are some Twitter tips!

4. Organize Your Work Flow

Do you have an editorial calendar? I’ve found that it’s very beneficial to organize your workflow into days, again I use Co-Schedule. For example, on the weekends, I usually spend an hour planning my week and figuring out which posts make the most sense fitting into our schedule. I also schedule my social media on Saturday mornings when our girls are watching cartoons. If I don’t have a HEAT broadcast, I edit all of my photos on Tuesday nights. I’m a morning person, so I usually write on Monday and Wednesday mornings, that way the blog doesn’t become overwhelming. Like everything in life, having a schedule is your key to success!

Sometimes it can be hard to find the right growth or traffic for your blog. These 5 tips for newbie bloggers will help you grow, learn from a pro!

5. Write From the Heart

Have you ever written something so personal, that your hand hovers over the mouse and just can’t quite hit that publish button? Sometimes it takes you days to get the courage to put it out there? Those are the posts that usually get the best response. There are a lot of imitators online so don’t be afraid to be original. Your voice is unique to you, and it’s special. Even if just one reader was touched by something you wrote, it’s a win in my book!

I hope these tips and resources help you to grow your blog! If you have any questions please comment below, or drop me a line on Facebook or Twitter!

How to Rock Facebook Live Like a Pro!

By Social Media, Video

Live streaming is all the rage these days. First it was Periscope taking us into the wild west of broadcasting from anywhere, and soon thereafter Facebook launched it’s own live streaming app dubbed Facebook Live. I personally still love Periscope, but Facebook is so easy considering you already have your built in audience.

But one of the questions I receive daily, is “how do you actually USE Facebook Live?” So here are a few things I’ve learned after trying out this new platform a few times!Read these tips from a TV reporter, and you will feel comfortable and confident on Facebook Live!

Do you have Facebook Live?

By now, yes everyone has the ability to go LIVE on Facebook. Exciting and terrifying right?! But how do you actually go live? Easy! Just hit “STATUS UPDATE” on your personal profile, or “PUBLISH” on your business or fan page. Then look for this little human icon!

Read these tips from a TV reporter, and you will feel comfortable and confident on Facebook Live!

Once you hit the Live Stream Icon, it’s time to get busy! Choose which way you want your camera turned, then click “CONTINUE”. Remember phone needs to be VERTICAL when live. You do have the capability to broadcast horizontally, but your viewers will see you sideways when you are live. Totally up to you, but for now I recommend vertical.

Read these tips from a TV reporter, and you will feel comfortable and confident on Facebook Live!

If you’re on your personal page, you can choose who you broadcast to on the next screen.

Read these tips from a TV reporter, and you will feel comfortable and confident on Facebook Live!

And if you’re on your business Facebook page you can start setting up your stream. Always start with a kick ass title! Read these tips from a TV reporter, and you will feel comfortable and confident on Facebook Live!

This is what we call a TEASE in the broadcast world. You want to entice your viewers enough to encourage them to tune in, but don’t give too much away. If you’re a bakery or a food blogger and are doing a demo, don’t title it, “S’mores Cupcake Recipe.” Title it, “The BEST S’mores Cupcakes You’ll Ever Taste!” You can even use an emoticon or two to convey your enthusiasm, just don’t over do it. Don’t forget to sell yourself!

You can also go live within Facebook groups as well!

Why Use Facebook Live?

If you’ve never done a live stream, you’re probably wondering, “But WHY do I really need to do this?” All live streaming tools do one important thing, they help you build INSTANT CREDIBILITY with your audience. It doesn’t matter if you’re a writer or blogger, small business owner, chiropractor, realtor, whatever your profession, if you’re trying to reach an audience, video is a surefire way to establish yourself as an expert. It gives people a face to trust, they finally are able to hear your voice, and most likely they will learn something helpful. And videos reach far more people on Facebook, hence increasing your visibility and digital imprint.

Have I convinced you to try it but not sure what to say? Don’t worry I’ve got you covered!

I wrote a FREE guide just for you!

How To Use Periscope

By Social Media

The world of live streaming has exploded since Periscope came on the scene in March of 2015, and now more than ever you or your business needs to add video to your repertoire. The great thing about Periscope is you don’t need expensive broadcasting equipment, just a phone and a topic! If you’re not sure why or what it is, you might want to start by reading my Newbie’s Guide to Periscope! How to Use PeriscopeSo I thought I’d take it one step further today and explain just how to use the newest craze. So I did a scope about this very topic below. Feel free to watch it, or scroll below for some tips and tricks to doing your first Periscope!

Most are intimidated to talk into the internet black hole but it’s really quite simple. If you’ve never done a Scope before, here are some of my tried and true tips and tricks that will help you start rocking Periscope, and get you a little more confident with being “on air”!

tips for broadcasting

  • Announce Yourself. Do this on social media in advance of your Scope and include when and where you will be broadcasting, and what it’s about. A lot of Scopers make a graphic for their Facebook following the day before, and then promote it on Twitter a few minutes before their broadcast. Twitter will send out a Tweet when you are live as well! Make sure this is enabled when you go live.

Periscope broadcast screen

BROADCAST SCREEN

(icons from left to right) Triangle means location. You can turn your location on or off. When you turn it on you will show up in the GLOBAL list more frequently. If you are at home with your kids, turn it off! Unless you want stalkers.

Lock is privacy. You can host private broadcasts if you choose. Just click the lock and add who you want to invite.

The Chat icon means you can limit broadcasting to only your followers.

Twitter means you will automatically Tweet out that you are live. Always enable this!

periscope autosave broadcasts

  • Save Yourself. Set your broadcast to Autosave – it will save in your phone’s camera roll. You can transfer this to your computer and/or upload to YouTube from your phone, (like I did here…Hi! Follow me there?!), or you can record on Katch.me. If you don’t do this your treasured recording will disappear into internet oblivion forever after 24 hours. Stop reading this and turn on Autosave now!
  • Titles matter. Think of it as a juicy headline to entice your viewers. ALL CAPS titles are more eye catching in the Global List as are emoticons. I always use a mixture of Upper Lower Case, and UPPER CASE…oh and hashtags of course!
  • Avoid Broadcast Mishaps. When you hit the orange Start Broadcast button: 1. Wait a beat before talking or your audio will be clipped. Like 3-5 seconds, and 2. your camera will be facing outward, not on you. DOUBLE TAP to use your forward facing selfie camera. Some people start by shooting an image, or their logo, and then turning around to them. You can also end your broadcast by showing a graphic of your website address, or social media links…food for thought!
  • Start Strong. The first minute on Periscope is the most crucial, this will determine if folks will stay and watch. So be confident, smile, and know what you want to say. Also, always acknowledge your replay viewers, ask for shares, follows, and hearts in the first minute! Here’s an example:

“Hi I’m Kristen, a TV Host, Reporter, and Writer. Thanks to everyone for tuning in here live and later watching in replay! Let’s get to know each other, where are you from? (say hi to a few peeps!) Today we’re going to talk about how to use Periscope so if you know anyone that might find this useful please share this now. Also don’t forget to tap your screen, we need to see those hearts! Oh and please follow me, I’d love to get to know you better!”

  • Do Resets. Keep in mind this is a live stream so viewers will come and go. Every few minutes do a reset and re-introduce yourself and what you are talking about.
  • Be Engaging. But most importantly be yourself. Don’t try to respond to every comment, do block trolls, and be concise. Keep in mind that it’s hard to hold an audience, so show your personality and try to stay on topic!
  • Finish Strong. At the end of your Scope recap what you talked about and give yourself a promo. A website address, ask for follows, whatever you need! Then SWIPE DOWN to end your scope. (I think I said swipe up in the video above, oops!)
  • Download This! Want to save your Scopes for You Tube in a horizontal format? Download this…they’re free 1280 x 720 templates! And if you don’t have Photoshop you can edit in Pixlr, a free version. You’re welcome.

There are so many great follows on Periscope that will teach you exactly what to do, I recommend watching a few to get the hang of it before you start. And as always, ask questions! I will try to get back to them as soon as I can…see you on Periscope!

5 Tips For Making Videos

By Video

After working in television as a producer, editor, and reporter for fifteen plus years, I have learned some pretty easy ways to make videos for the web. What I love about new technology is you don’t even have to buy a camera these days, you can do everything on your phone as a beginner! Recently I spoke with April O’ Leary about the importance of video integration at FloridaSunCon. This was a great conference to learn not only about blogging, but branding, social media, and of course video!

Want to learn how to make videos like a pro? Check out these 5 tips from an Emmy award winning television reporter and producer!

why is video important?

  • 500,000 blog posts are uploaded every day to the web, versus 100,000 videos.
  • YouTube is the largest search engine.
  • By 2018, 80% of content on the web will be video
  • Brands are looking to add content marketing into their strategies.

What does that mean? There are great opportunities out there to generate revenue by using video, but you have to be willing to take that first step!

So I thought it would be appropriate today to share 5 tips for making videos! Don’t be scared of video, it’s fun, and takes less time than actually writing a post! And unlike your one dimensional writing, video helps you come to life and build a bigger connection with your audience. If you are a video newbie, here is a quick tutorial to get started.

5 tips for making videos!

  1. Equipment – You can easily shoot your video just using your phone, the quality these days is tremendous. If you want to up your audio game, try adding a lavalier mic you can plug into your phone! Here’s an example of one for iPhones (never used this one), and a Rode that’s pricier but is really good!
  2. Create a Set – I can’t stress enough how easy it is to set aside a little space in your house or office anytime you want to shoot a video. It’s minimal work, clutter free, and needs to represent who you are as a brand.
  3. Create Purposeful Content -The video web world is already full of talking heads. Stand out, be different, share what you are an expert in. And if you’re nervous, plan out some bullet points to keep you on track.
  4. Use Natural Lighting – We all know by now, outdoor natural lighting is best. Position yourself in front of a window for optimal lighting.
  5. Edit and Upload – Nowadays you can do so much just from your phone. Use iMovie or the Movie Pro App and upload directly to You Tube. Check out this iMovie video I did for a client!

If you’d like some examples of  ways to integrate video into your business or blog, here are a few examples of how I’m using video currently:

And if you don’t want to edit videos, you can always live stream on Facebook Live or Periscope! I hope this motivates you to at least try this new strategy for your business, brand, or blog! And if you have more questions, please leave them in the comments.

How to Pitch Brands Like a Boss

By Blogging

When I wrote this post on My Advice – How to Get What You REALLY Want over on my lifestyle blog, it received a huge response. Many loved it, were motivated by it, but had one big question.

How do you ask for what you really want? Especially in regards to pitching brands.

how to pitch brands Like a Boss

Well that’s a good question, because we all have fears of rejection. And getting over the hump and actually making the ask is a big step, so once you decide to do it, what do you say? I did a Periscope on this very subject this week, you can watch it here!

For bloggers that really want to work with brands, here’s what I recommend and what worked for me at mommy in SPORTS. Please keep in mind, there are a thousand ways to work with sponsors through blog groups, this is just a more direct way of getting what you want!

how to pitch brands like a boss!

  1. Make a List of Brands You Can’t Live Without

Seriously, what do you use all the time, who would love to partner with? For me its Vega protein, Nutribullet, some South Florida jewelry companies, you get the picture. Make the list so you can decide how you would work with them. (I learned this tip from blogging guru Katy Widrick, highly recommend her blog and courses!)

  2. Write a Kick A*s Bio

I encourage everyone to write a re-vamped bio so you can really sell yourself! What have you done recently, what were you in your former life? Have you been featured on another site? Won or nominated for an award? Everything matters, including your social media stats!

  3. Craft Your Pitch

What is it that you’d actually like to do if you partner with this company? A sponsored post? A review? Giveaway? Video? Know ahead of time what you’re capable of, and pitch it!

  4. Confident Close

The #1 mistake most people make is in the closing. They write things like, “if you think you might be interested, please let me know. Thanks for reading.” WHAT? Be confident and assertive! “Please let me know when we can make time to chat, I know that this partnership would be mutually beneficial to both of us. I can’t wait to work with xxxxx brand!”

  5. Use Your Voice

You know how on your blog you’re super witty, and everyone loves your writing? Well do that in your email to brands. This isn’t a job interview or a cover letter, so show your personality and give them a reason to want to work with you!

  6. Find PR Contacts or Use Website Contact Form

Yes, the contact forms have worked for me, numerous times! Mostly though I try to find a PR or Marketing contact. If all else fails use the power of Twitter! I recently was retweeted by Target, and Chris Bosh of the Miami HEAT. Twitter works ya’ll, but that’s for another day! (Here’s my Twitter advice!)

  7. Title

I actually had a question regarding how to title these pitch emails, and that’s a great question. I always do something fun like, “Let’s Work Together – mommy in SPORTS loves Vega!” or something cheeky. Again, you want them to open the email, so think teaser!

Still not sure exactly how to approach a brand? No worries, here’s a sample email:

Hi, my name is Carrie Bradshaw and I am former columnist turned stay at home mom, and blog at www.manolosmama.com. I have a loyal following of readers and reach around 10,000 UVM’s per month. Additionally, I’m very active on social media and love sharing products that makes mom’s lives easier with my fans! Shoes are my go to, but have had to trade in the high heels for flip flops, and have become addicted to kitchen products! One thing I’ve learned as a new mom I can’t live without is my Nutribullet. Who knew?

I use it everyday for smoothies, and even make baby food with it! I was thinking of writing a post on how versatile the Nutribullet is, because seriously, I don’t cook. But the Nutribullet makes delish meals for my baby and I every day, and even if you’re food prep challenged, you need a Nutribullet in your life!

Please let me know when we can schedule a time to chat about working together! I’m available and able to write a sponsored post with high quality images, and would love to do a giveaway with my readers. Additionally, I’m active on Periscope and could do a DIY Video of how I make my organic parsnip baby food, or even a video for You Tube for additional cost.

I can’t wait to work with Nutribullet, I really think a partnership would be mutually beneficially to Manolos Mama and your brand! Thanks so much for your time and consideration, talk soon!

Thank you,

Carrie

How to Build Instant Credibility

We’re Open!

By Media

It’s official…we’re open!

Well we’ve been doing business for awhile, but now it’s time to launch misMEDIA! What is misMEDIA? Well it’s a company born from my personal parenting blog called mommy in SPORTS! (Get it….mis?) I started the blog during Christmas of 2012, and over the past few years it’s really grown. Since starting the parenting blog, I’ve become a contributor to the Huffington Post, She Knows, Bundoo, Bustle, Scary Mommy, and Mamapedia to name a few, and mommy in SPORTS has also won an award. I’ve learned so much about writing, branding, social media, and taking my knowledge of the television world and translating that to the growing digital media world, but the true story of misMEDIA begins with cupcakes.

Cupcakes…huh?!

While writing this article about my favorite cupcake baker Misha of Misha’s Cupcakes, I began suggesting ways she could improve her digital footprint. Her cupcakes are the most amazing confections I’ve ever tasted, but they weren’t being showcased on all of her social media channels consistently. So luckily Misha allowed me to be her guinea pig, and I hers, and together we created an amazing social media presence.

Halloween Chocolate Ganache XCUMiss Humblebee snowed in

We worked with Misha’s for over a year, with everything from social media, marketing solutions, photography, event planning, and even doing some public relations. Along the way we’ve also worked with Baby Otter Swim School, Nourishing Women, Miss Humblebee’s Academy, Creative Squirrels, and Live Well Chiropractic to name a few. And I’ve also spoken at blogging conferences about integrating videos, and taught a break out at a Periscope workshop. I’ve really enjoyed producing content in a variety of ways, so I decided to do it on a more professional level.

So if you’re in the need for some branding direction, social media content, or even want to start your own You Tube channel, give me a call or drop me an email. I can even media train you or teach you how to be on camera like a pro! And if you need help with making your own videos, I have a DIY Video Class that’s under construction.

Please follow @misMEDIAsavvy on Twitter, and eventually coming soon a new Facebook page. I can’t wait to help you create your own savvy brand! Let’s get started!

Newbie’s Guide to Periscope

By Social Media

I admit, when I first heard of Periscope I groaned. Yet another social media platform to master? No thank you!

But then I logged on and watched a few scopes and I was hooked. Periscope is a phenomenal tool for all businesses, brands and bloggers, and something we can all find a way to utilize.

Newbie's Guide to periscope

WHAT IS PERISCOPE?

Periscope was launched in March of 2015 and already is estimated to have over 7 million users, gaining it’s first million in just 10 days. By comparison it took Facebook a year to reach 7 million users! It was bought by Twitter and is a streaming video platform that allows you to broadcast anywhere from your phone. It’s a cross between Skype and Google Hangouts, but with a twist. Users can comment and broadcasters can talk back and interact. Basically anyone with a phone and the Periscope app can become their own mini television network. But instead of chatting with a person – you are alone talking to whomever has logged on and is watching.

WHO USES PERISCOPE?

Basically everyone! There are marketers of course, selling their products. And bakers and artists demoing their DIY’s and cool techniques. There are homeschooling moms sharing their lessons. And of course celebrities and comedians entertaining their fans. Television broadcasters use it to share behind the scenes glimpses of where they work. There are yoga classes and guided meditations. And folks on vacation give you the sights they are seeing. No matter what your niche or interest, you can find someone similar on Periscope!

hearts

PERISCOPE SPEAK

Just like Facebook and Twitter have Likes, Shares, Retweets etc, Persicope has it’s own jargon. The fastest way to learn of course is to watch others and emulate what they do. But if you still don’t get it – here’s the quick lowdown!

  • Scope – Broadcasters on Periscope will say things like “Welcome to my scope!” A scope is essentially your broadcast.
  • Scopers – Someone who uses Periscope frequently, a broadcaster.
  • Share – Most Scopers will ask you to swipe your screen to share their broadcast as they are talking, this enables them to reach more followers.
  • Hearts – I didn’t understand hearts at first, but if you want to give the Scoper you’re watching some love, you tap your screen. Periscope will tally the hearts and give users a color based on how many they’ve received.
  • Replay – So it’s a little confusing, but Periscope saves your broadcast for 24 hours. Not everyone will watch you live, many will watch you on replay. So make sure to acknowledge your replay viewers! (More on this later)
  • Followers – Yes you need followers to reach more people, so many peeps on Periscope will ask you for a follow. The great thing about Periscope though is it’s linked to your Twitter account, so when I logged on I found I had followers pretty quickly.

WHY USE PERISCOPE?

For those of you who haven’t jumped on the video bandwagon, Periscope is the perfect way to start! It’s less expensive than shooting and editing videos for a YouTube channel, and a great way to engage with your following. If you’re a business you can talk about different products you sell, if you’re a blogger you can talk about your niche and give parenting or cooking tips, the possibilities are endless! Keep in mind by 2018, 80% of web usage will be video, now is the time to capitalize on this new medium! Get in now and start early to earn the biggest rewards!

If you haven’t guessed, I’m pretty passionate about video (here are more tips for making videos!) and am obsessed with Periscope. Though I’ve only done a few scopes, I can see the value in it and am slowly trying to gain followers. This platform is the wild west and live streaming is a MUST for all brands, businesses and bloggers! Yes bloggers….if you don’t know why you should be using it yet, read this from Chaos and Kiddos!
